Preventing Heartworm Naturally
April 19, 2007 |
There are several methods to implement heartworm prevention. The more common approach is either thru taking monthly heartguard or annual injection to prevent our pets from getting heartworm. There are various conventional preventive measures, talk to your vet to choose the right one for your pet.
For myself, I prefer a more natural way in preventing heartworm is a 6 monthly blood test. The blood test is to show if there is any signs of heartworm condition. The vet will then be able to quickly administer treatment.
Getting your pet tested for heartworm every 6 monthly is because if your pet is tested positive, the duration of 6 months is too short for the heartworm to multiply in their system. At this stage of the disease, the condition can be treated for most cases and your pet brought back to health with proper treatment.
However, we must remember to bring them for the heartworm check once every 6 months without delay as any delay may complicate treatment and worst, dealth of your beloved dog from the disease. So mark clearly in the calender when is your next vet visit and take the opportunity to get your vet to have a general physical check on their health.
Lastly, make your own informed choice for your pets on weather you want to go for natural methods like I do or go for annual/monthly dosage of the preventive medication for heartworm. I have known of dogs who died of heartworm diseases too when they are not given the preventive medications and relied purely on natural means I have mentioned above. Going with preventive measures save your pet from hash treatment if heartworm is detacted. So, make your own choice on what is best for your pet.
