Pet Food Recall: Latest Update 5 May 2007
April 19, 2007 |
What do i do now If I DO NOT want to feed homecooked foods.
- Check the FDA’s website regularly to see if any more pet foods have been added to the recall list. Alternative site to check is here =>Recalled pet food here. Note that some brands recently recalled may not be updated yet.
- Check if your brand is currently in the recalled list and stop feeding the brands that have been recalled.
- Seek medical advice if your pet exhibits symptons such as loss of appetite, bloating, lethargy, and/or vomitting as this could be signs of organ failures which could be fatal.
- Read the labels of any food you buy. They should avoid products containing unnamed animal and vegetable byproducts, wheat gluten and rice protein.
- Find out where the food is made, the brand owner may not be the manufacturer of the product.
5th May 2007: Officials told New York times that melamine was added to animal food to make buyers think that the protein levels are higer then they actually are. Scientists have also found that melamine is not the only cause of making our pets and farm animals sick but the combination of other chemicals such as cyuranic acid which forms crystals in the kidneys.
25th April 2007: Federal health officers announced that Hog farms in 6 U.S. states have received tainted pet food with industrial chemical. Some of the hogs are quarantined for observation.
23th April 2007: Corn Gluten, the latest recalled ingredient in Cat and Dog food containing melamine. The gluten is the culprit behind the death of 30 dogs in South Africa. It appears that Chinese manufacturers intentionally spiked their products with melamine to produce elevated protein levels. For now, avoid all pets foods and treats with wheat gluten, corn gluten, and rice protein.
19th April 2007: I used to feed my dogs Natural balance dog food as I always felt that they gives the best to my pet back when I was still feeding my dog dried pet food. After hearing the news of Natural Balance dog food recalled, I was shocked and amazed. Luckily I switch to homecooked food more then 6 months back and today, the additional effort to cook for my dogs is all worth it. So, with even one of the most natural pet food source already in question, how can I trust anymore pet food from now on?
The chemical, melamine, is believed to have contaminated rice protein concentrate used to make a variety of Natural Balance Pet Foods products for both dogs and cats, same compound that contaminate wheat gluten of other recalled pet foods. Natural Balance is recalling all its venison and brown rice canned and bagged dog foods, its venison and brown rice dog treats and its venison and green pea dry cat food.
Friends, do your dog a favour, no matter how much you trust your existing pet food brand, start cooking for them instead because we never know which pet food will be reacalled next. You will be rewarded with a healthy and happy dog. Not only will you save heaps on medical expenses in the long run, your pet will be very eager to have their next meal each day.
Lastly, for those of you who feed your pet heart guard as a preventive measure against heart worms, stop immediately. There is wheat gluten content in them and it is highly suspected that this will also be recalled soon. Check out my article on alternative means of preventing heart worms and learn more about using a more natural method in preventing heartworm.
