Keeping Your Dog Trim and Fit
June 29, 2007 |
Dogs, like humans, if leading a sedantry lifestyle without much physical activities, we tend to put on weight quickly. To ensure our dogs are kept trim and fit throughout their life, some form of daily physical activity is necessary and it helps them maintain their muscle tone as well.
Some benefits of regular activies for our pets includes:-
- ease digestion
- improve mental well being as it relieves stress
- maintain healthy weight/reduce excess weight
- increases bone strength
- tone the muscles
- improve cardiovascular health
- reduce risk of diseases such as diabeties, high blood pressure, cancer
So, want to achieve all that benefits for your pets? Start a regular regime of physical activities with your dog soon!
If your pets are in good shape (i.e. healthy and no joint problems), you can go for a jog, brisk walking, play some games like fetch in a dog park. If joint problem is a concern or if your pet is of age, you can just go for a slow walk or bring him/her for a swim. Swimming can be enjoyable for your pets if they love the water. It does not hurt their joints and they reap all the benefits of an exercise regime.
Remember to go slow in the begining. Do not overdo it the first few times you are starting a regular exercise regime for your pet. Make it fun so your pets look forward to the next day’s activities. Overweight dogs should go slow. Start with just 5 mins of brisk walk or stroll first before you increase the duration for longer periods.
Most importantly, stick to the regime, especially if you are attempting to get fido back in shape. Consistency and patience is key to seeing results. It will be worth all the efforts.

Here’s another good reason to walk your dog: The walk ‘files’ their long nails so that it wouldn’t be sharp when they jump on you!
