Dog Run Do’s and Dont’s
April 23, 2007 |
Bringing our dogs to dog runs or dog parks were dogs are allowed to run and socialize freely is most pet owner’s favorite outing activity. However, I have seen many dog fights and even unnecessary growling of dogs at each other and I felt that some Dos and Dont’s should be shared here so we all know what to look out for the next time you visit a dog run or dog park where dogs are allowed to roam freely in an enclosed area.
Tips at dog run/dog parks.
1) Adhere to the park rules and regulations – Dog park rules are there for a reason. Some are added on due to experiences of park authorities.
2) Pick up after your dog’s poop – If stepping on poop is not your favourite pastime, so let us cooperate to make the park a cleaner place for all. If you see someone not doing your part, sound them out nicely to do pick up after their dog.
3) Ensure adequate rests in shady area – This is especially important in humid and hot countries to prevent heat stroke. Ensure your pets have rests in between play at a shady area.
4) Socialize your pets well before letting them run loose in the dog run – Dogs that are not socialize may pick up fights for no reasons at all as they may be scared or territorial in a new environment. So if you pets tend to pick up fights with other dogs easily, avoid brining it to the dog run.
5) Ready fresh water supply available at all time
6) Spray on anti fleas spray on their paws and all over their body before heading off to the park.
7) Bring along an immediate stop fight measure (e.g. spray water) to stop any possible fights to avoid injuries.
Things to avoid
1) Do not wear shoes for your pet, especially in hot humid countries in the afternoon. Dogs actually cool themselves down from panting and also sweating at their paw pads. This is how a dog body does to prevent heat stroke.
2) Do not bring treats, foods or toys to the park, chances are dogs may fight for their share. Even if you are confident that your pet will be well behaved even with treats and toys, we cannot be sure that the other dogs will not start a fight. Any well behaved dog, when provoked, may start to fight as well.
6) Do not allow your dogs to play for long hours without taking a break for water and rest. Dogs are like children, they may forget to take their breaks. So stop the play and confine your pet to rest if necessary.
