Stop Sales Of Dogs and Cats In Pet Shops
May 31, 2007 |
I have never supported pet shops that sell live animals especially cats and dogs. I will just walk out of any pet shops when I see them selling live animals. Why? Because I came to learn about puppy mill business couple of years back and was dismayed that any human could be so heartless to keep animals in crowded and dirty condition purely to breed the animals for sales. The animals are treated like business commodities. And when the dogs can no longer breed, they are often discarded like an unwanted “goods”. Manchester, NJ town Brick is considering passing a law to ban sales of dogs and cats in pet shops. The trigger point came from a shelter house representative speaking during council public sessions. This brought an awareness of the situation and seriousness of “puppy mill” business where dogs and cats are kept in poor conditions, over-bred and many ill-treated by the breeders who kept the animals in dire state purely for business.
If the law is passed in 2 weeks, this law will dictate what a pet shop is licensed to sell. Licenses issued for pet shops would permit the shop to sell pet supplies for all types of animals, including cats and dogs. But, the license “shall not permit the pet shop to sell cats and dogs.”
Let us pray and hope for the law to pass and this shall serve as a reference to other states and countries to be more aware of puppy mill business as an act of cruety to animals and to stamp it out forever! That will be my dream come true…. no more needless suffering of helpless animals.
Some of you who may ask, then how else can we have a pet? Well, there are many reputable breeders all over the world today that takes pride in their breeding program to ensure only the best genes and temperament dogs are used in their breeding program. If you prefer to have a purebred puppy, this is the best alternative to purchasing from pet shop. However, adopting a pet is my recommendation as many dogs (including purebreds) are abandoned or given up today. Visit animal shelters and talk to their representatives to discuss on your options.
